The Bather
1915
Oil, graphite, paper, and metal on panel
Alexander Archipenko
American (born Ukraine)
Born 1887, died 1964
Archipenko's "sculpto-paintings" merge painting and sculpture according to the principles of Cubist collage. Using a wide range of materials and objects, the artist exploits the shifts between flat surfaces and projecting volumes. Modern images of bathing women, such as this nude carrying her towel while she wades in the water, echo classical scenes of frolicking goddesses and nymphs.
