This gory war scene was created by digitally combining many different photographs that were staged in a studio. Acting as a theatrical director, the artist has cast the recent conflict between Russia and Afghanistan as if it were a monumental battle painting from the Napoleonic era, raising questions about the power of images to shape history, both long ago and recent.
