Vase with Scenes from Amadis de Gaula
c.1560-70
Tin-glazed earthenware ( maiolica )
Workshop of Guido Durantino, Italian ( Urbino ), documented 1516 to 1576; or workshop of Orazio Fontana, Italian ( Urbino ), active independently 1565 to 1571.
This vase belongs to a service showing illustrations from a Spanish novel popular throughout Europe in the mid-sixteenth century. The service was destined for Spain, probably as a diplomatic gift. One of the stories depicted takes place by moonlight - a rare night scene found on maiolica.
